16.01.01 Introduction

Scourging was the legal preliminary to crucifixion.[1]  The pain of this affliction was so severe that prisoners often died in the process. In the case of Jesus, the severity of the scourging was so severe that He was unable to carry His cross to the crucifixion site.  Furthermore, not only was He scourged, but He was mocked by soldiers who played the ancient “King’s Game” as described below.
